Rebuild 2

After using the Elan on a regular basis for a number of years after it’s chassis change the clutch suddenly went and there was a worrying knocking coming from the rear of the car. The Elan was put away in the garage with the intension of fixing it ‘sometime soon’…
Many year later (around 8), now in the early 2000s having just seen another Elan on the road I was reminded that ‘I have one of those…’. It was decided to strip the car down and get the bodywork resprayed, removing the multiple coats of paint – original Regency red and then numerous coats of black.

The work was first going to be done by Peter Day’s bodywork man who was looking to set up on his own but after failing to find anywhere where he could spray cars he went to work for Mick Miller and the car followed him there. He left and Mick said he would respray the car. Unfortunately Mick died before he could start the car and the car ended up at SMS in deepest Lincolnshire. They did an amazing job in a very quick time (months rather than years) and the car still looks good a number of years later…
